John Taylor Gatto – School is mindless by design

December 23, 2007

A link in reddit alerted me to John Taylor Gatto’s web page. Gatto wrote The Underground History of American Education, which asserts that The US education system was created not to enhance the intellectual abilities of the students, but to create an obedient and productive army of factory workers and mindless consumers. I enjoyed the book a great deal: whether or not you accept Gatto’s assertion, it’s hard to argue with the fact that our culture is largely composed of mindless consumers.
