A Vote For Latin

December 3, 2007

Nice op-ed piece in the NY Times today titled A Vote For Latin, bemoaning the fact that none of the presidential candidates studied Latin in school. The piece is written by Harry Mount, author of Carpe Diem: Put a Little Latin in Your Life. I’ve never read the book, but I did take 5 years of Latin in school. Mount mentions a lot of reasons to study Latin: it strengthens your prose and teaches you the etymology of much of our English language. However, I’ll offer another one. No one studies the classics to make money, which means that Latin teachers have been motivated by a genuine love for the subject. I kept on taking Latin not because I thought it would be useful, but because the teachers were so inspiring.
